Opening Night Exhibition for DAR LUZ
Dar Luz is a collection of works by three bay area based artists: Yadira Cazares, Ave-Ameenah Long and Alex Martinez. DAR LUZ, the Spanish words for Give Birth/Light, can be thought of as a re-birth, renaissance, renewal, re-awakening and re-imagining of ourselves as artists. Yadira Cazares investigates familiar subject matter within a new medium, resin on plexiglass paintings. In her selection of new paintings, Yadira works to delve deeper into a process-oriented language. Ave, a photographer native to Oakland, seeks to highlight the African diaspora of black bodies, providing more imagery of folks surviving beautifully. Giving a nod to the Harlem Renaissance, Ave uses a film camera to photograph her subjects with her soulful classical style, thoughtfully selecting her background textures and compositions. In her selection of new works, Alex Martinez, chooses to experiment with new materials, adding dimension to her works, through fiber and ornamentation. Linoleum block relief printmaking, acrylic painting, and fiber works collide in her mixed media works.
